About Alpenstock
Colorado-first. Curated, not crammed.
A premium outdoor retailer built for the way people actually hike, climb, and camp in Colorado. Fewer products, picked with judgment. Clear advice. Real service when you need it.
Shopping for outdoor gear shouldn't feel like reading a spreadsheet. The biggest catalogs bury the gear that actually works at altitude and in Front Range afternoon storms under thousands of SKUs that don't. We started Alpenstock to do the filtering for you: each item on the site earned its spot, and we can tell you exactly why it's here.
That means we carry fewer packs, fewer shells, fewer stoves. But every one is something we'd personally pack for a day on Grays and Torreys or a weekend in the Weminuche.
The name is the tool.
An alpenstock is the iron-tipped walking staff that came before the ice axe: the original piece of mountain equipment. One dependable thing you trust your weight to.
We named the store after it because that is the bar we hold gear to. Not the longest spec sheet, not the widest shelf: the thing that works, chosen over a row of almosts.
The name also carries the mark. Look at the wordmark and the l is the staff, planted through the baseline. When the mark stands alone it leans fourteen degrees: planted, in use. One drawing, two jobs, and nothing decorative about either.
Alpenstock is founded and run in Colorado, and the lineup is chosen for the conditions we actually hike in: altitude, fast afternoon storms, long miles above the trees.
The proof lives on the site, not in this paragraph.

How we choose gear
Three filters. In this order.
Filter 1
Made for Colorado
Does it perform at altitude, in Front Range afternoon storms, above treeline? If not, it doesn't clear the first filter.
Filter 2
Holds the miles
Does it survive rocky approaches, shoulder-season weather, and the real wear that reveals whether a product was designed for trails or catalog photos?
Filter 3
Stand behind it
Would we recommend it without caveats? If there's a 'but' we have to add, it doesn't make the cut, regardless of brand or margin.
We're not a marketplace. We're not trying to carry everything. We're not going to pretend a trekking pole is revolutionary when it's a solid trekking pole. And we're not going to inflate review counts or invent urgency banners to rush a checkout.
If you want the full encyclopedia of outdoor gear, that's what REI is for. If you want a tighter, higher-signal lineup picked for the mountains we live in, that's us.
