From Estes Park, enter RMNP via Beaver Meadows Entrance and follow Bear Lake Road to the end. Free shuttle available from Park & Ride when timed entry is in effect.

Bear Lake Road permits release at 8:00am MT on a 30-day rolling window. Summer weekend permits sell out within 60 seconds. Either book 30 days ahead or use the free park-and-ride shuttle (no permit needed).
Most visitors don't realize the 0.8mi Bear Lake Loop is a complete loop, not an out-and-back. Walk counterclockwise for the best progression of mountain views. Hallett Peak dominates the southwest skyline.
Calm mornings (typically pre-9am) give perfect Hallett Peak reflections in the lake. Position on the eastern shore facing west. Bring a tripod for slow shutter; pre-7am there's no breeze yet.
RMNP enforces strict wildlife-distance rules. The lake's elk herd is habituated and approachable, but getting closer than 75ft is a $200 fine + may end with the animal being relocated or euthanized.
At 9,475ft, Bear Lake stays icy late into spring. From October through May, microspikes are non-negotiable for the lake loop. Park & Ride shuttle still runs in winter (different schedule).
Bear Lake Road requires an RMNP Timed Entry+ permit ($2 reservation fee, recreation.gov) for the May 22–Oct 18 window — reservations sell out within minutes of the 8am rolling release. If you miss the permit window, the free park-and-ride shuttle from RMNP's Park & Ride lot needs no permit and runs every 10–15 minutes. RMNP entrance fee ($30/vehicle/day) is separate and required regardless of how you arrive at Bear Lake.

Bear Lake is one of RMNP's wildlife hotspots — elk graze the surrounding meadows year-round and bugle through the September–October rut; pikas and marmots colonize the rocky alpine above the lake in summer.

Resident herd grazes the surrounding meadows year-round. Peak viewing is the September–October rut — bulls bugle from the trees at dawn. Keep 75ft minimum distance.
