Practical-craft notes for this specific trail — timing, route, photo, etiquette.
Calm mornings (before the wind picks up) the lake mirrors the Foothills perfectly. Get there before 7am for stillness. The east shore framing puts the Foothills at the optimal angle.
Wonderland is a designated waterfowl habitat. Swimming, wading, and off-trail walking are prohibited (OSMP fines up to $150). Dogs leashed at all times — even VST tags don't exempt.
The 88ft of gain is so minimal that snow rarely makes this trail impassable. Even with 6 inches on the ground, the wide path stays trafficable. Microspikes only after a major storm.
Start the loop heading north — you save the western Foothills view for the second half, which is more dramatic. Most people go clockwise; reverse it for the better photographer's experience.
No spigot at the trailhead, no creeks crossing the path. The 1.8mi feels short but a hot July afternoon will catch you without water. 16oz is enough.
Wonderland Lake's small lot (19 standard + 2 ADA spaces) is north-Boulder's most popular short-walk trailhead — fills by 9am on summer weekends but rarely full in shoulder seasons. Free parking, no overnight stays. SKIP bus stops one block away for a car-free option.
Highlighted months offer the best conditions.
Wonderland is one of Boulder's premier birding spots — the lake supports wetland species (great blue heron, mallards, kingfishers) and the surrounding shortgrass prairie hosts red-tailed hawks year-round. Mule deer browse the perimeter at dawn.
